After hearing so many good things about Parasite, I went ahead and watched the movie. With Parasite being the first foreign movie to win a Best Picture Oscar made it more compelling to watch. Yes, I watched it three times because it is THAT good!
Parasite follows the story of the Kim family who’s a very poor family struggling to make ends meet. They cunningly put themselves in the service of a wealthy family – the Parks. Apart from that, the Park family is unknowingly housing a stranger in their basement for years.
Parasite is as perfect as it can be. It’s an excellent film that is superbly written, brilliantly acted and even has wonderful set and design! I couldn’t think of anything to criticize. The message Parasite is sending us is much bigger and much deeper than what I can imagine for a film. The movie deserves all the praise and awards it got!
Where do I start? Parasite just got all the right formula to tell the story and make us emotionally invested in each character in the movie. I’m just amazed how perfect the casting was. I enjoyed each of their performances. I’m already hunting for the actors’ other projects as I’m just immensely impressed. Director Bong Joon Ho is the hero of them all and I already have a watch list with all his projects in it.
What makes Parasite compelling is its depiction of the key issues that we have in our lives. Particularly, the inequality of it all.
- The wealthy gets better opportunities, more influence and lives a very comfortable life.
- The working class struggling to get out of poverty or even get the right opportunities despite being highly qualified.
The imbalance of both Kim and Park family’s lives is on display in Parasite. And it gives us viewers something to reflect about. How inequality is at play in our everyday lives.
It’s easy to conclude that the title Parasite pertains to the Kim family who bluffed their way into the Park household. But it’s not as simple as that. If we look beyond the plot, we can also say that the Parks are also parasites. In what way? through their entitlement, they can’t do house chores, they leech off the Kim family’s labor who is working beneath them.
Parasite is as deep as it is and I’m just glad with the awards that the movie got. A lot of people are able to watch the movie and hopefully get the message that the filmmakers are trying to send us. It’s a movie that is highly recommended. Please catch it if you haven’t.
My rating for Parasite: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 out of 5 stars).
