Black Butterfly has been released since May 2017 but I wonder why it’s only showing now in the Philippines. Anyhow, I’m glad I caught the movie today. If there is one word to describe Black Butterfly, I would say unpredictable.
Black Butterfly (2017)
Outside a mountain town grappling with a series of abductions and murders, Paul (Antonio Banderas), a reclusive writer, struggles to start what he hopes will be a career-saving screenplay. After a tense encounter at a diner with a drifter named Jack (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Paul offers Jack a place to stay-and soon the edgy, demanding Jack muscles his way into Paul’s work and the two men begin a jagged game of one-upmanship that will bring at least one tale to an end.
Usually, when I watch movies, I tend to figure out the ending or the twist of the story. But for Black Butterfly, I got it wrong twice! There were two major twists and I didn’t see them coming! This is probably why I liked the film even though it was a bit dry.
Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers was a revelation! His acting was so good! He’s just on another level despite Antonio Banderas giving a great performance too. Piper Perabo was the weak link here but she’s an eye-candy as always.
In this movie, I got a peek on the lives of writers. It’s difficult getting your work recognized and much more difficult if you have writer’s block. It’s funny that Antonio Banderas’ character still uses an old-fashioned typewriter despite the film setting being the present time. If I think about it, the whole plot didn’t make sense but since the movie writers made a huge revelation in the ending indicating that everything was a Dream is pure genius! I was totally engaged the whole movie. 🎥
Black Butterfly is a good movie to catch if you like suspense. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
