Whenever I drive home, I always pass by Mien-San Noodle House, a restaurant in Quezon City. It is situated just right in the middle of Ortigas & it’s easily accessible since there is ample parking available, especially at night that all the establishments beside it are already closed.
Last week, I dropped by the office to pick up some things. We decided to just have a quick dinner at Mien-San Noodle House. It has been a long time since I last visited there (it was last year I think). The restaurant has a very chinese theme & you’ll actually notice that 90% of the diners are Filipino-Chinese.
Once seated, we were given crispy wanton while we waited for our orders to arrive. It has a unique twist as this crispy wanton was sweet. I love their choice of free appetizer!
Here is what we ordered:
- Fried Tofu (Php 78)
Whenever I go to Mien-San, I always make it a point to order their fried tofu. I don’t know why but it seemed to be my favorite dish from the restaurant. It was just tofu that was fried, but the portion size was just right. It wasn’t too oily, and giving that added taste was the soy sauce which was also done in the right amount. Fried Tofu, if done right, with quality tofu, with simple preparation and good seasoning is really something delicious.
- Fish Fillet w/ Oyster Sauce & Vegetable (Php 238)
This is fish fillet with taiwan pechay, some carrots & some mushrooms. This tasted great but I felt there was just too many ingredients that made me appreciate the dish less. I think it would be better if it’s just the fish fillet with the mushrooms. The mushrooms really complement the fish really well. But the pechay really competed with the taste of the dish, and the taste of the fish was lost.
- Eggplant w/ Spicy Sauce (Php 168)
This dish is eggplant with taiwan pechay. It stays true to its name, it was spicy!! Again, I felt there was just too many ingredients in the dish. I would have preferred this to have just the eggplant & the spices without the taiwan pechay. I somehow felt that this dish & the fish fillet dish I described earlier have only 2 differences – the main ingredient (one is fish, the other is eggplant) & the chili sauce which makes this dish spicy. Don’t get me wrong though, it was delicious. But when the meals start out with a simple dish like the fried tofu, you realize that oftentimes that simplicity really can be more delicious when it comes to food.
- Soya Milk (Php 50)
Mien-san’s soya milk is just the best! Oh, how I love this drink. When they served it to me, it was actually newly made. Still very hot. They served it to me with syrup & a glass with ice. You can opt not to put the syrup if you want to cut down on your sugar level. Whether with syrup or not, with ice or not, the drink still tasted as yummy! A must-order! 🙂
When we got out of the restaurant, the guard saw me taking pictures of the entrance. He then approached me and mentioned that they are moving to the stall beside it. They rented the place and they’ll be moving out soon. It was exciting as the current place is old already and badly needs renovation. Good thing, they got themselves a new place but are staying in the same area (it was just 2 stalls away). I can’t wait to dine at Mien-San again once it moves. I will order their fried tofu & soya milk again, will try their noodles too as it’s their specialty after all.

Last Saturday (July 31, 2010), my family went to eat at Mien-San Noodle House. It was our first time to have dinner there. But we had a very bad experience… the service at Mien-San Noodle House is very poor, the food served to us is very loooonnng… My daughter is already very hungry and kept asking why the food have not yet been served. We “follow-uped” the waiters for a couple of times. Other customers who came later than us were already served with what they ordered… Poor service! We were very hungry! I heared one of the waitress talking with the other waiter about forgetting to place the order in the kitchen… My husband was the one who wants to try this restaurant. But after what has happened, he doesn't want to go back to Mien-San Noodle House anymore. This will be our first & last at this restaurant. We will also not refer it to any of our friends… Poor service!!! 🙁
